Looking for a good tax accountant in NYC/NJ

Recommended Posts

Hello

I am looking for good accountants in NYC or NJ area. Any recommendations? I am an independent contractor now full time and opening an LLC, so I figured I should get some professional help. Feel free to PM me with referrals.

Also, I want someone who is not too conservative and willing to go into grey areas, without breaking the law. How do you choose a good accountant, any tips? What is a fair price I should look for accounting for personal and solo LLC income, without owning any RE or other properties?

Thanks

Firm or just a one man shop type accountant? I guess the easier way to ask the question is, what kind of accounting budget range will you be in? I could probably put you in touch with the former if you're looking for a commercial RE operation type thing. Childhood friend of mine works with a few of the big NYC RE guys always in the news who happen to pay very little in taxes. But if its under lets say $10k annually, I would just look into doing it yourself/finding a one man advisory shop.

My wife is an accountant as is half my family so I do all the stuff for my properties and LLCs "in house". Not worth the fees unless you're clearing $100k in rental revenue, IMO. Pure 1099 stuff, I think a half reasonable person can work through as well.

Hey Greg, thanks for the reply. Actually I own zero real estate. I am a full time independent contractor in healthcare services. Figured it would help having an accountant who knows the ins and outs of all the deductions with some understanding of tax law. One man shop is fine as long as they know their stuff and are ambitious. That being said I do plan on investing in real estate going forward.

Honestly almost any small or one man shop can help. Half of NYC is independent contractors working as consultants for whomever, and there are many accountants who service them. Most are no stranger to playing a bit loose with deductions, but that is your line to define. Unless you have a situation which is genuinely unique, it’s a bit of cookie cutter service. I would ask colleagues first but if that fails I can recommend someone if you need.

Hi LC, yes I have asked a few colleagues and have spoken to several on the phone. I'm sure most accountants can do the job but I just want someone I can trust and rely upon and that's not going to disappear when I try to reach out. Yes if you don't mind can you PM me the referral?

No worries - just sent you a PM. This guy was recommended by a friend, she consults over at MS and says he’s legit. She generally has her head on her shoulders so I trust her, hopefully it works out.
