The Game - Neil Strauss

The book has absolutely nothing to do with investing, and the book is 10 years old.  It is a book about landing a date and getting woman.  The techniques in this book are outdated, and many single women today know all about the book.  But the overall concepts I believe are still useful.

It helped me go in my late 20’s from 0 dates in 1.5 years, to 3 dates a week each with a different woman.  Oh those were the days.

I suggest no one to read this book. Its like taking the red pill and the view of the world will change. In the beginning for the better but, then the true nature of things come out.  I have strong opinions on this book and can probadly write a novel about my experiences since reading this within the first year it came out.

I believe this book changed a generation of men. Combined with free access to internet  porn creates a program of objectifying women.  This one book created a multi-million dollar industry seemingly overnight.

Personally, I have found it amusing and informative. Also in the end the author finds true love and acknowledges how much more fulfilling a life with the person you truly love is than a life of continual dating without a true and deep emotional commitment.

The only thing I hope is the same might be true for Ghost: now he is happily married, I hope that these are the days! ;)

So like the author did you spend "two years bedding some fine chiquitas and studying with some of the North America's most suave gents"?

I got way better at that stuff once I realized that the right body language is huge. Not so much what you say, but the way you say it. Women are animals too, just like us. Except they are not so much attracted to looks and shapes but more to status and dominance.

If you want to understand how human behavior works, think about what type of person you needed to be 50k to a million years ago to survive and reproduce succesfully. The women who were attracted to alpha male types (but not complete psychopaths) were most likely to live and succesfully have offspring. Women attracted to weak men would get less food, and would be more likely to die by the hands of some other guy or wild animals. Because the world was very dangerous for a 5 foot tall pretty girl. You basicly needed protection quick, because being alone would hurt your chance of survival. Especially if you had kids. That is also why I think girls usually mature earlier then boys. A lot of things suddenly make a lot of sense if you think about this in that context.

Ofcourse if you look at it now, those instincts make no sense. The world is very different. But those instincts are still in place. And if you pretend they do not exist things can get ugly.

And I think on the one extreme end you have the guys who think women are just angels. The white knights. They are usually the whipped types who have to ask permission for their wive with everything they do, and their wives/girlfriends completely run over them and run their lifes. And then they get taken for everything they got in a divorce because their women completely lost all respect for them.

And on the other extreme you have those sociopath pick up artist types who see women like objects they can use for sex and all they have to do is pull some of the right levers to get it. They completely obsess about it. Like that mystery guy in the book. Did not seem very healthy. I like to be somewhere in between .

That said, this book is not the best to read I think. They go a bit overboard with it and it does get tedious.

I don't think the concepts are outdated. women may know about them. but they still are at a loss to combat them. that's because the concepts are rooted in evolutionary biology --- Selfish Gene stuff. you can boil it down to this: attraction is NOT a choice. that's why women, as much as they know it's wrong for them, are attracted to narcissists and jerks, and not to nice guys. it's why men are attracted to floozy gold diggers with expensive boobs, and not the girl next door with coke bottle glasses (who just might be smart AND hot). it's biology. Ever wonder why sociopaths can get girls without even trying? because they just don't give a schit about rejection. works in sales too.

In discussion with friends about the Game some have very strong feelings as you likely do.  It is like alcohol, some % of the population will abuse the knowledge.    But simply ignoring the information that is out there is much like pretending the concepts of value investing do not exist.  I.e. ignore it at your own peril.

The information in the book needs to be taken in context; I view it for the introverted.  If an individual is terrible at dating or simply doesn’t date this book can help.

Gio,

You are correct I am happily married with kids.

The Game gave me the knowledge and confidence of what to do, say and prepare on a date.  That is what is important on a date, confidence.  And how do you get confidence, practice.

Let’s face it the first 3 dates for a guy is basically a performance.  Only after you get past the part where she doesn't think you are a psycho do you finally get to know the person.  I don’t believe that my wife would have given me a second date if I didn't have the confidence from all the other ones.  I would have likely been awkward on the first date and would have missed out all the memories I have from getting to date number 2

A true gentleman doesn’t tell, but I am not a gentleman so yeah I had my share.  Not so attractive at the start, but got better as time went on ;-)  But I was looking for a partner, but I can’t deny the side benefits were nice.

Yeah it does appear woman go for jerks and narcissists, but what these guys have in abundance is confidence.  You take a guy who is confident on a date or one who is awkward and doesn’t know what to say, who do you think women will be attracted to?

I do not agree with the floozy gold diggers with big boobs, the guys that are attracted to that are just idiots.

The narrative is closer to fiction.  Many of the events are exaggerated and the people portrayed are sometimes composite characters with no single real life counterpart.

Some of the named puas are curiously gun shy in person and reluctant to demonstrate any ability whatsoever...

What's interesting about books like "The Game" "Rich Dad and Poor Dad" etc is that even though many of the stories are fictional/made up, they do contain some important concepts.  Rich Dad and Poor Dad is purely fictional.  But it contained concepts and view points that are very important.  Owning a big house is a liability not an asset.  You want to continue to accumulate assets that generates income for you.  etc.

In the hand of a sociopath, "The Game" has the potential to be exploited to the nth power.  In the hand of your average joe who just want to attract the opposite sex and understand all the not so subtle land mines that you have to navigate through, it is a really good read.

I quite strongly believe that people that think that this kind of material is productive in a self-improvement fashion are deluding themselves. Everything is done in order to gain the approval of others.

Typical outer scorecard instead of inner scorecard. I'll take Buffett/Mungers advice on how to be an attractive person over this anyday, but I realize I'm probably preaching to the choir on this board :) I haven't read the book but I consider material like this to be hazardous to self-improvement, especially considering the crowd that naturally seeks this sort of information.

Well... Knowing how to read signals is not everything :)

Actually I was very confident on myself and I wrongly assumed that my wife was flirting with me the first time we met. She was actually just presenting herself because we had a friend in common, but ...I was fixated on her, I did not realize our common friend was there.

So it is not about reading signals... It's about letting them read.

Maybe I should not be learning how to invest being overconfident...

Well...

I found I got a lot better "with women" when I started dating women I genuinely liked, not who fit some description of "hot". So much easier in the end to just be yourself and, if she doesn't like it, cordially move on.
