Also, some of you keep wondering why I want Fairfax to hold more cash in the holding company or reduce debt...it's because of scum buckets like this who from time to time are going to attack the company.

Buffett doesn't have to worry, because he keeps enough FU money in the company to buy back stock, debt or support any of the businesses.  I would really like to see the same at FFH long-term.

Shorts come sniffing around, you are going to get effed up trying to short FFH.  That's ideally what I would like to see.

    Cheers!

I think the following tool is more comprehensive, hence more reliable and/or predictable: http://archive.projectbiglife.ca/

"The acting Attorney General, Sally Yates, has betrayed the Department of Justice..."

I'm not sure I've ever seen a presidential memo with language like that. Is this common? That seems extremely strong language to include if you are not going to charge her with something.

Geeze, the guy is insane. The world used to think Kim Jong-un was the craziest leader but someone has apparently taken his place. So depressing.  :(

  4. Buffett on immigration...but what does he know...not like he's given this much thought!  Cheers!

The headline should be: "Buffett attacks his self-created strawman."

I've never met a serious person who is against legal immigration.

Well, the new executive order on travel restrictions also includes green card holders for now.  So those that have already gone through the legal immigration vetting process are now being held at gates and borders.  Cheers!

But how is that possible? Isn't that unconstitutional? Can't imagine this happening here in Canada. Supreme Court would overrule any decision or decree which blatantly discriminate among citizens, creating de facto a two tier system.

  5. Put barb wires and a minefield, I don't care. Just cut it off!

And yes times are different. Yesterday it might have been thousands truly looking for a better life. Today it could be one or two infiltrating trying to destroy part of the country.

Cardboard: With all due respect, do you suffer from PTSD or what?

  6. i take comfort in the fact that mexicans can now fly to canada and walk across the northern border, should it prove necessary.

    Haha!  That's hilarious!

Don't tell anyone, otherwise Trump's going to build a wall along Canada's border, and make us pay for it!

If all this madness continues the way it has started I think we might see more US citizens than Mexicans flee "great" Trumpanistan to seek refuge in ours. Luckily for them I don't think our government will turn them back (even if they come in ILLEGALLY) or build a wall between our 2 countries.

  7. For those who support Trump, as a scientist, I find that it is what is the most scary thing: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/trump-administration-restricts-news-from-federal-scientists-at-usda-epa/

    This is a dangerous path.

Of course, a lot of you don't care about the subtle change and the erosion of your democracy, as long it is strengthening the economy in the sort term.

Reminds me what we experienced here in Canada under Harper government when scientists were forbidden to express any opinion or communicate the results of their research without his Cabinet approval. And I think Trump is by far worse than Harper. Just wait and see...

  8. I think we all know that Germany was a republic at one time.  But changes in ideology take hold due to economic circumstances...we are witnessing something similar, hopefully to a far lesser degree, globally.  The only way to protect a democracy is to never let that type of ideology take hold.  Once half the population starts to buy the propaganda, the half truths, alternative facts...well, you have a problem.

    Exactly!

On the other hand, it has helped me with one thing.  I look at all these countries that are communist, fascist, dictatorships, Venezuela etc. and I think, "how did that country end up that way?  Why did the people so easily surrender their free press and freedom?".  Then these threads come along and help me answer that question.  (Mostly with variants of, "I don't care if he puts everyone in the country in shackles as long as he improves the economy.")

  10. Good point Wisdom but let's not forget that many of them are well educated or business oriented and will work themselves out of the misery sooner than one think, either by themselves or with the help of their communities and families. If peace is restored in their country (which I truly wish) then they might go back, otherwise they'll stay, strive and prosper. Call me optimistic... :)

  11. A question I've been pondering for a while now: all these refugees fleeing their countries for a better life in Europe and now in Canada are going to need jobs of course but also houses, cars, furniture, appliances, clothes, food, etc. Isn't that somewhat good for our economies? Maybe not right away as governments (meaning the taxpayer) need to fund all sort of support programs, but on the longer run.

    Thoughts?

  12. I don't think there is anything defensible about current U.S. foreign policy - especially in the Middle East. We're arming people in one country and blowing up those same people in another country. We've been at war for decades with extremist groups in the Middle East, and now we're arming individuals connected with those same groups to help us fight the very same dictators that we armed and funded decades ago.

We claim that we're there as a force for democracy to save the innocent civilians, but then are responsible for more innocent civilian deaths than terrorist groups (also, see the bombing of the Doctor's Without Borders facility). Of course, this follows a decade of other similar blunders - like declaring war on Iraq for housing terrorists cells and WMDs but largely ignoring Afghanistan (where Osama was supposedly hiding) and remaining allies with Saudi Arabia which has been linked to funding terrorist cells....

So yea, nothing defensible about wasting trillions in taxpayer dollars to cause chaos in a region and then fight on both sides of the war.

Selling billions of weapons to Saudi Arabia and other "allies" must be good for the economy...
