  1. I'm digging into a bit of the tax implications of a Canadian owning (5-25% of) US based LLC / S corps (effectively pass through companies).

I've googled the basics, but have yet to talk to a Canadian that owns, say 5% of a US S corp without paying 80% tax.

I'm hoping that someone on the board has done some research on this or owns 5% or more of a US based S Corp.

    Thanks!

  2. I'll be there ;)

Last year we were able to attract a very diverse crowd -- Aside form fund managers that collectively managed about 30billion, we had people from Apple Retail, Specialized Bicycle Components, Ex Harvard and Stanford business School professors, Phd's, VC people, PR people, etc.  The diversity of the crowd lends itself to amazing discussions and insight.

You can read some of the reviews and feedback we've gotten here: http://rethinkworkshops.com/

  3. Any notes from the meeting would be appreciated.

    TIA

There is some guy selling notes for $33 or something like that. I won't advertise for him though.

No free notes so far AFAIK.

That would be me.  I have 2013/2014/2015 notes. You can find them here http://myinvestingnotebook.blogspot.ca/2015/03/daily-journal-2015-meeting-notes.html but keep in mind there is an audio copy floating around and a lot of free notes out there.

  4. I posted a review of Guy's book on my website with a lot of excerpts.

In the end the biggest lesson that I took away from meeting with Guy and reading his book is that we need to stop living our life through other people. I can play basketball every day for 18 hours and I’m never going to be Michael Jordan. I can study financial reports until I’m blue in the face and I’m never going to be the next Warren Buffett. In the end The Education of a Value Investor, is an important reminder that we need to be more authentic versions of ourselves. We need to do what is right for us and that might not be what is right for others. We need to stop pretending to be other people and compromising our internal standards or ethics. We need to find who we are and how we want to live. “Instead of trying to compete with Buffett,” Guy writes, “I should focus on the real opportunity, which is to become the best version of Guy Spier that I can be.”

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to interview Michael Mauboussin. We talked about what advice he’d offer his younger self today, the definition of luck, decision journals, how organizations can improve their decisions and more.

    ...

Your most recent book, The Success Equation, points out something that few people seem to consider: that most things in life are a mixture of luck and skill. What’s the mental model we can take away from this?

The main point is to think critically about the activity you’re participating in and consider how much luck contributes to the outcome. In some realms it’s negligible, such as a running race. But in others, it’s huge. Once you understand luck’s role, you can understand how to approach the activity more thoughtfully, including how you develop skill and interpret results.

But I can tell you that our minds are horrible at understanding luck. So any mental model has to overcome our natural tendency to think causally—that is, that good outcomes are the result of good skill and bad outcomes reflect bad skill.

  6. Hi,

I have the opportunity to interview LR Rittenhouse, author of the Buffett recommended Investing Between The Lines on Monday June 3rd.

Right now, I've got about 8 pages of questions for her, but I'm sure I've missed some stuff.  I thought I'd open it up to the board for suggestions.

So, if you have any questions for her that you'd like to see me ask her feel free to reply to this thread or send me an email.

If you haven't read the book, I've posted a decent summary here

    Thanks.

  7. I read the website mostly through an RSS reader. One idea that would be helpful to me is to put the name of the poster on the feed for the post.

The RSS view doesn't seem to show me the author of the post.

Currently I see something like this:

Title: Re: I Worry About "The Shot Heard Around The World"

Source: from Corner of Berkshire and Fairfax

It would be helpful to see
